Trailing by four strokes through 36 holes, Live Oak graduate John Ellis was unable to make up the difference on Friday and Saturday at stage two of the PGA Tour's Qualifying Tournament, and he missed the cut by nine strokes in the end.

Competing at the Deerwood Golf Club in Kingwood, Texas, Ellis finished tied for 58th with a 5-over 293 (72-74-75-72). Only the top-21 golfers advanced to stage three, with the cut set at 4-under.

Through two rounds of stage two, though, Ellis sat tied for 53rd with a 146, and was just four stokes out of making the cut.

But on Friday, the San Jose resident shot a 3-over 75, which included three birdies, four bogeys and one double bogey.

On Saturday, Ellis started strong when he shot four birdies on the first seven holes to finish the front nine at 2-under. On the back, Ellis had two birdies and two bogeys, but carded a double bogey on the par-4 15th to finish with an even 72.

The Qualifying Tournament, also known as Q-School, is a three-stage event where golfers from around the world compete in order to earn their PGA Tour card. This year's Q-School began with 965 golfers, and only 35 will be rewarded with a Tour card.

The third and final stage is scheduled to be held at the PGA West Nicklaus Tournament Course and the TPC Stadium Course in La Quinta from Dec. 3-8.

Ellis was exempt from the first stage this year after he won the Order of Merit on the Canadian Tour Championship in September.
