The Anzar girls volleyball vaulted into the win column in the Mission Trail Athletic League Tuesday night when they defeated host Gonzales in three games (25-23, 25-15, 25-22).
The Hawks are now 1-2 in the MTAL and 8-7 overall.
Anzar, which fell behind 6-0 in each of their three losses to Carmel last week, fell behind Gonzales in Game 1, 8-3.
"We've been having a hard time starting games strong," coach Chris Wardlaw said. "We started down 8-3, and two of the points we won were on missed serves by them."
With the offense struggling, though, Wardlaw said the Hawks had strong passing, nonetheless. Erin Deleissegues, who contributed seven service aces Tuesday, was "lights out" with her passing, Wardlaw said.
"If we didn't have all the great passing, our offense would have crumbled," the coach said.
Setter Kerstin Tuning delivered another strong performance for the Hawks with 28 assists and Alex Flores had 11 kills. Camille Merz contributed five kills and three blocks.
"Hopefully, this is a positive beginning for us," Wardlaw added.
Last weekend, Anzar went 1-2 at the Mount Madonna Invitational. They defeated Scotts Valley in two games before falling to St. Thomas More in two games and Pacific Grove in three.
Wardlaw noted that his team was without their starting right blocker for the tournament, and is already looking forward to the next time the Hawks play Pacific Grove, an MTAL rival.
"I'm confident we can come back and get PG in league," Wardlaw said.
Anzar will host Soledad Thursday in San Juan Bautista at 6 p.m.
