Cabrillo scores three times in second half, beats Gavilan

GILROY

A span of approximately five minutes in the second half dictated the entire game between Gavilan and Cabrillo last Friday as the visiting Seahawks pocketed three goals in the second stanza to upend the Rams 3-1 in the Coast Conference opener.

Gavilan is now 0-1 in league, 4-3 overall.

"We dominated (the first half)," Rams coach Albert Marques said. "But they caught us sleeping at the beginning of the (second) half and it cost us the game."

The Rams carried a 1-0 lead to halftime after Armando Hernandez found Fabian Iglesias on a cross ball from the left side in the 15th minute.

But Cabrillo knotted the game at 1-all when they scored within the first five minutes of the second half. After play went back-and-forth between the two teams, Marques said, Gavilan was called for a hand-ball inside the box, awarding the Seahawks with a penalty kick.

Cabrillo, which was a semifinalist in last year's state playoffs, took advantage of the PK opportunity and went up 2-1 as a result.

"They're definitely one of the teams to beat," Marques said.

The Rams trailed by the same 2-1 margin late in the contest and with 10 minutes left in the game, they pushed everyone forward in order to score the tying goal. But instead of the equalizer for Gavilan, Cabrillo scored on a counter to push the lead to 3-1.

Gavilan will look for the win column on Tuesday when they play West Valley College in Saratoga at 4 p.m. On Friday, they'll return home to Gilroy to face City College of San Francisco at 4 p.m.
