The Anzar girls volleyball team was this close to taking the first two games against Carmel on Thursday night in San Juan Bautista. The third game was lost by a slightly larger margin, however, and the visiting Padres defeated the Hawks in three games (25-27, 24-26, 15-25).
Anzar is now 0-2 in the Mission Trail Athletic League, and 6-5 overall.
Coach Chris Wardlaw said that Carmel opened up leads of 5-0 and 6-0 in each of the three games.
"And we had to fight back," he said. "Eventually, we'd pull ourselves up to their level, but right at the end we'd make just a couple of key mistakes."
In Game 2, for instance, the Hawks held leads of 24-23 and 25-24, but each time was answered with a missed serve.
"We just couldn't turn the corner," Wardlaw said. "Beautiful volleyball was played for the first two games, but not so much in the third game."
In the third, Carmel opened up a 13-1 lead to start. Anzar battled back a bit but never made a serious threat to overcome the large deficit.
Setter Kerstin Tuning had 27 assists and Erin Deleissegues supplied 15 kills and three aces. Camille Merz added six kills, three blocks and two aces.
Anzar will play in the Mount Madonna Invitational this Saturday, an eight-team tournament where Division 5 powerhouses St. Francis of Watsonville, Mount Madonna and Castilleja are expected to attend. The tournament will begin at 8 a.m.
