Saratoga

Led by a pair of second-place finishes from the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relay teams, the San Benito boys track team finished in a three-way tie for second at the West Valley Relays in Saratoga on Saturday, and just one point short of first-place Evergreen Valley.

The 4 x 100 team of Jamil Taylor, Ryan Shorey, Mitchell Cook and Chris Koroluk clocked a 44.82 to take second place, and finished one-tenth of a second faster than third-place San Lorenzo Valley. Pittsburg took first in the race with a 44.54.

In the 4 x 400, Taylor, Shorey, Ian Bambrick and Nick Soza finished second with a 3:26.69, less than a second off of Christian Brothers' 3:26.12.

"I think we really did well all around," boys coach Iran White said. "We scored second in the 4x1 and 4x4, I was extremely pleased with that.

"We've got a lot of potential there. The goal is to make it to CCS; a long road to go still, but things are going good."

San Benito finished in a three-way tie with North Monterey County and Los Gatos, as each team compiled 36 points. There were 43 teams present at the West Valley Relays.

Other Tri-County Athletic League teams that were present included Palma, which took 16th with 15 points, and Salinas, which was 39th with four points.

"It was pretty big," White said. "We don't want to read too much into it, but it's nice to see the competition and get a feel for how your team stacks up to the other horses out there."

The girls track team stacked up well, taking seventh with 29.5 points. Los Altos was first with 54 points.

"The girls did really well in the 4x4," coach Laurie Cottrell said. "They just pulled it off. They did really well."

The 4 x 400 team, made up of Kelsey Russell, Sophie Coelho, Vanessa Farias and Melisah Cortez, took fourth with a time of 4:19.50.

In the throws, the Yoldi sisters - Sarah and Lila - led the way for the Lady 'Balers, as Sarah took fifth in the discus with a throw of 103-9, while Lila was third in the shot put with a heave of 36-0.

Cottrell said this was Sarah's first competition of the year after she was out with an injury earlier this season.

"That was a really good marking for her first meet," Cottrell said.

San Benito will compete Saturday at the St. Francis invitational in Mountain View. The first race - the 3,000 meters - will commence at 9 a.m.
