Last week Martin Cheek reminded us to honor our Constitution. This week LULAC honored Paula Solorio as Woman of the Year because she makes the Constitution work.
All the platitudes we learned from our teachers like "innocent until proven guilty", "right to a lawyer," "right to know the charges," "right to privacy," and "protection from cruel and unusual punishment," Paula makes sure they work for the innocent and most vulnerable. Besides she performs much of her work "pro bono" in her law firm of five lawyers specializing in Immigration Law.
Recently she traveled to Eloy, Arizona, the location of a "detention center" to plead the case for a client's son. She won his case and his release. But how strange she said it was to enter through locked fences and high gates to view on the entry wall the stock market of the prison company flashing price changes fro shareholders to view.
We did the same in World War II and rounded up Japanese AMericans into "detention centers," but no one made a profit. We regret that behavior. Now we are repeating our mistakes.
I am so proud of our families and schools in Hollister to produce youth like Martin and Paula. They give me faith for the future. Otherwise our current national government badly needs to be changed. Just ask Martin or Paula.
