A challenger has stepped forward in the District 3 supervisor's race, while there are now four residents vying for the sheriff's seat, according to election's office records.

Robert Rivas, active in the political scene for years but yet to run for elected office to this point, has pulled papers to collect signatures in lieu of campaign fees. He is set to compete against incumbent Supervisor Pat Loe, who is seeking her third term on the San Benito County Board of Supervisors. District 3 encompasses southwest Hollister, south of South Street and east to Memorial Drive.

In the race to succeed Sheriff Curtis Hill, meanwhile, John Darren Thompson has indicated his intention to run against Marshal Robert Scattini, Undersheriff Patrick Turturici and Hollister police Sgt. Ray Wood. Thompson is a lieutenant with the Watsonville Police Department.

In the race for District 4 supervisor, nothing has changed since political newcomers and longtime businessmen Jerry Muenzer and Phil Fortino pulled papers to run against incumbent Supervisor Reb Monaco, who will seek his third four-year term on the board. District 4 includes South County, southeast Hollister, Tres Pinos, Ridgemark, Paicines, Bitterwater and New Idria.

In the other races so far, District Attorney Candice Hooper, District 3 Supervisor Pat Loe, Clerk/Recorder/Auditor Joe Paul Gonzalez, Assessor Tom Slavich, schools Superintendent Mike Sanchez and Treasurer/Tax Collector Mary Lou Andrade all have indicated intentions to seek office again.

Candidates will face off in a June primary and a November general election.
