City to ban parking at busy intersection
Jun 30, 2009
 By The Free Lance Staff

HOLLISTER

Soon enough, drivers turning left from Monterey Street onto Fourth Street near the courthouse should have a better view of oncoming traffic, which city officials expect will increase safety in that busy area.

Hollister City Council members earlier this month approved a resolution that will place no parking signs to remove two parking stalls along Fourth Street at the corner of Monterey Street. That area often can block the view for drivers turning westbound.

A city council staff report notes the "concern is that vehicles that are traveling northbound on Monterey St. do not have adequate sight distance to safely enter the intersection." Council members have approved one reading of the ordinance and have to OK just one more - possibly at the meeting next week - before it would become official. Once the ordinance is approved, it normally takes 30 days to see fruition.

City engineering official David Rubcic explained the move is a "preventative" measure spurred by complaints and concern about the "sight distance."
