Though the Juan Bautista de Anza Historic Trail has been a fulfilling topic of work, Superintendent Stanley Bond will leave to become superintendent of Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park near Atlanta.

Bond, who has been the superintendent of the trail since February 2005, said he "has projects here that he will miss but had to apply for this opportunity."

Although Bond will miss the trail, he said helping run a larger unit and having family nearby are the reasons he will leave. Many park service workers transfer to different locations throughout the country, and Bond said he "feels lucky to have been selected" for this position.

He plans to implement some of the tools that the de Anza trail used for involvement such as podcasts and updating their Web site in Georgia. One of the major upcoming events for the battlefield is the sesquicentennial of the Civil War.

"I want to make sure the community gets the use out of the park that they want to see," Bond said.

With Bond leaving for Georgia, the National Park Service is looking to fill his position before he leaves.

The Juan Bautista de Anza Trail commemorates the route that the Spanish used to establish San Francisco's Presidio in 1775. From this expedition, cities like San Jose were established when the original settlers left the Presidio in 1777 and moved south. The trail covers 1,210 miles in the United States from Nogales, Ariz., to San Francisco. The trail continues into Mexico, with an additional 640 miles, ending at Culiacan.
