From the Files: Top 10 blotter reports
Oct 18, 2008

The following is a Top 10 glimpse at some of the month's most interesting, unfortunate, outrageous or occasionally humorous police blotter reports. Since it's already Oct. 18, we're kicking it off with September's list, in chronological order. Look for October's list in early November.

Mayhem, Sept. 5

Police responded to a report of mayhem on Aug. 3 in the 1000 block of Memorial Drive. At the scene they found a victim with a large laceration on his lip. The victim was uncooperative, refusing to give any details about the incident. Mayhem is a term used by police when an injury, brought about by an assault, is severe enough to cause permanent disfigurement.

Illegally obtaining a prescription, Sept. 9

Police took a report on Monday that two unknown suspects attempted to use information from a Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital doctor's files to obtain a prescription at the pharmacy. Police will investigate the matter.

Dragged behind Dumpster, Sept. 13

A man in the 300 Block of San Felipe Road at 5:10 p.m. reported that he was dragged behind a Dumpster by an unknown assailant. The unknown suspect placed a gun to his neck and threatened him, then fled.

Meth found on lawn; Sept. 13

Police reports indicate that a man in the 1700 Block of Cienega Road at 8:58 a.m. Sept. 13 found a bag of methamphetamine on his front lawn and called police.

Break in and threats, Sept. 14

Police took a report that a man at 8 p.m. September 14 entered an acquaintance's home in the 1100 Block of Cedar Street, broke into the back yard, and then broke in through the back door. He made threats to the victim in the house. Police reports also indicate that the victim received threatening phone calls and text messages from the suspect. No arrests have been made, but police have forwarded the case to the district attorney's office.

Pepper sprayed over debt, Sept. 15

At 7:20 p.m. Saturday, Hollister police responded to a shooting in the 1700 block of Cienega Road. Police say a man had gone to his brother's house to settle a debt. An argument ensued and the visitor sprayed his brother with pepper spray. His brother responded by shooting him in the leg. The man who was shot was arrested and then taken to the hospital. He was released from the hospital that day, but it is unclear from the report whether he remains under arrest. Information on his brother, the shooter in this incident, has been forwarded to the San Benito County District Attorney's office, and charges against him are pending.

Dog-napping, Sept. 20

At 10:15 a.m. Saturday, police took a report of grand theft from a woman who told them her dog was stolen from her residence in the 1200 block of Aspen Way.

Wanted for jail escape, Sept. 23

Jail records show that the sheriff's office took Theresa Murray - the records didn't indicate a residence or age - into custody on Tuesday on warrants and fresh charges totaling nine felonies and two misdemeanors. It is known that Murray was wanted for escaping from a jail by using force. It was not clear at press time from which correctional facility she escaped, but it was not the San Benito County Jail. The other charges on the warrants involved passing fictitious checks and various drug charges. The fresh charges, meaning crimes she was committing at the time of her arrest for the warrants, include possession of methamphetamine, grand theft and being under the influence of a controlled substance.

Recklessly evading police, Sept. 22

A suspect fled a traffic enforcement stop on Monday and led police on a low-speed pursuit on Nash Road before stopping and allowing a passenger to leave the car and flee the scene. The suspect drove away at a high rate of speed, but then stopped again a short time later. A second person fled the scene, and then the driver was arrested for felony vehicle evasion. The two suspects that fled remain at large.

Tree theft allegation, Sept. 27

A woman in the 900 Block of Suiter Street reported to police that her neighbor had trespassed and cut down her lemon tree. No arrests have been made in the case.
