Jeff Taylor, a congressional candidate for California District 17, has quit the Republican Party citing his distaste for the party's views on family matters and the handling of the recent economic crisis.
Taylor, a Salinas farmer and businessman, said that he is a lifelong Republican but that the party's becoming "en vogue with big business and government" caused him to leave.
Although Taylor guessed that he would still be on the ballot as a Republican, he is officially registered as "decline to state."
"'Decline to state' is a category of voters that refuse to claim a party affiliation," said Taylor on his Web site.
He feels that the Republican Party has ulterior motives with their recent actions and has gotten away from issues like family values, an important item to Taylor. His main focus now will be on Proposition 8, a ballot measure making same-sex marriage illegal.
The announcement was made Sept. 26 at a pumpkin patch operated by Young Life Monterey County.
