District offers free summer meals
Jun 10, 2008
 By Natalia Galbetti

The Hollister School District starting Monday will give its students ages 18 and younger a full meal a day until July 11.

"We thought because of the way the economy is and people losing their jobs and homes, it's a good time to do this," said Janet Felice, district manager of food and warehouse services.

The district's Summer Feeding Program is an extended version of the federally funded National School Lunch and Breakfast Program active during the school year. Although children during the school year have to qualify for the meals based on their families' incomes, anyone under age 18 is eligible for the summer program.

Nearly 60 percent of students qualify during the school year, Felice explained.

"For the Summer Feeding Program, everyone is categorized as free."

Students who wish to participate in the summer program can receive one meal a day and must eat it at the distribution site. Adults may purchase meals for $2.75. According to Felice, meals will follow the same menu as during the school year, consisting of milk, a vegetable and fruit and an entree.

A complete list of distributing sites and times can be found on the Hollister School District Web site at www.hesd.org/education/district/district.php. For other questions, contact Janet Felice at 831-630-6388.
