Baler Hall of Fame


The Baler Education Foundation seeks nominations for the Baler Hall of Fame. There will be an induction ceremony April 19 at Ridgemark Golf and Country Club. Residents can nominate a graduate, coach, faculty member, staff member or volunteer who affected the community while at San Benito High School can request a nomination form from Michael Querry.

Garden plot picking

Vista Park Hill's annual community garden plot picking is set for Saturday, March 1, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Cancer research benefit

A tri-tip barbeque dinner and auction will be held at 5:30 p.m. March 1 at the San Martin Lions Club at 12415 Murphy Ave., to benefit Jacob's Heart Children's Cancer Support Services and cancer research at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital in Palo Alto. The price for dinner and participation in the auction is $15.

The annual Lady Elks Bunco Social is set for March 5 at the Hollister Elks Lodge. A social is at 5 p.m., a dinner at 6 p.m. and Bunco at 7 p.m. Join us for an evening of food, fun and conversation and a chance to win. The cost is $10 for Bunco.

Retired teachers meeting

The San Benito County chapter of the California Retired Teachers Association will hold its next meeting March 5 at 10:30 a.m. at Paine's Restaurant. Members are reminded to bring their volunteer hour logs. Following the business meeting is a luncheon at which members have a choice of calamari steak or chicken parmigiana. A guest speaker is chosen, so come and be surprised!

Band's Spring Concert

The Watsonville Community Band presents its 60th Spring Concert tonight at the Veterans Memorial Building, 649 San Benito St., at 7:30 p.m. March 5. This free concert will feature renditions of "America the Beautiful," "Light Cavalry Overture," and a big band arrangement of Barbara Streisand classics. The band will also debut their newest song, "Red Hat Serenade," written by band member Bill St. Pierre in memory of his late wife, Doris, who was an active Red Hat member.

VFW pasta feed


The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9242 invites the public to attend its inaugural pasta feed fundraiser March 22 at the Veterans Memorial Building. Proceeds go to support VFW programs while providing support and services for troops fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan and those returning home. Doors open at 6 p.m. and dinner's at 7 p.m. From 8 p.m. until midnight there will be music and dancing. Tickets are $25 per person.

AARP Tax-Aide Program Seeks Volunteers

The AARP is seeking volunteers of all ages who want to learn tax law and help prepare tax returns for middle and low income taxpayers. Volunteers receive free training from the IRS and are asked to give a minimum of 40 hours over a ten week season. Local training is scheduled in late January 2008.

Emmaus House seeks volunteers

Emmaus House, a safe shelter for women and their children that are victims of domestic violence is seeking additional volunteers to assist the staff and clients. Openings are available for transportation of clients, general housekeeping, children's activities, bookkeeping, general office work and assisting house management with other necessary operations. Experienced counselors, teachers and health service personnel are also needed on a volunteer basis. Applications can be obtained by calling 831-636-7224 or by email to: alma.emmaushouse@yahoo.com.
